Is your complexion what led you here this week? For some, the answer is yes. Your challenge could be in the form of skin irritations or hormonal skin eruptions. Either way, there are a lot of fingers pointing back to the gut as the primary culprit. But how? Our body is a pretty amazing machine. It can tolerate some crazy things we put it through and it still comes back fighting. But occasionally, it can’t tolerate what we do (like eat foods we are actually sensitive to or use products loaded with chemicals) and our skin steps in to help process the garbage out.
Our skin is an outlet chimney. Meaning, that it is an organ that helps us expel toxins. That’s why we can sweat! When we eat, drink, or breathe in toxins, our organs work together in this amazing system to keep us as strong as it can. To give our skin a helping hand, it’s important to drink a lot of water! That way the toxins go out our urinary chimney instead. Much easier, right?
However, when we begin to feel poorly, and our skin displays irritation, then that’s a good time to take a step back and start looking at what could be causing it. Many people will do an elimination diet to remove common culprits such as dairy, gluten, sugar, or meat. They remove these foods for a few weeks and then begin to reintroduce to see if the problem changes. It’s very important to pay close attention to what your body is telling you! If you take a moment to listen, you’d be surprised what you can learn.
If food is not the culprit for skin outbreaks, hormones might be! As a woman, I know what it’s like to have cyclical outbreaks that don’t come around any other time of the month. I also know that during that time, I craved LOTS of sweets which can contribute to skin outbreaks, so it made sense. My food choices weren’t always the greatest during that time. But, there are things you can do about it! Learning more about foods that have an effect on hormone balance is one. Using essential oils and other products to help balance hormones is another.
